Ladies Night Out

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Post Pic

Thursday night attracted hordes of ladies to StyleChicago.com’s “An Evening of Modern Beauty.” Set in the lavish W Chicago City Center, guests circled around more than 25 fashion, beauty and lifestyle vendors while sipping complimentary martinis, wine and beer. Pampering and entertainment was the universal theme as women engaged in various feminine indulgences, such as eyelash extensions, massages, shopping and product sampling. The vendors included the likes of K. Amato, Fusion Beauty, Massage Envy, Trish McEvoy, Xtreme Lashes and Swaby. Aside from the obvious entertainment, tasty drinks and outstanding venue, women enjoyed a ladies night out and, maybe more importantly, the overflowing goodie bags. Stuffed with $250 worth of fashion, beauty and food products, the bags were worthy of the ticket price alone—something that’s hard to come by in this economy. Style Chicago outdid itself with this annual event that was bigger than last year’s and all the more impressive.

Simply Fabulous: Korres Mango Butter Lipstick

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

post thumbnail

I just picked up this tube of Korres’ buttery smooth lipstick in Coral. The color is gorgeous (the perfect summer hue), and its silkiness feels more like a lip balm than a lipstick ($18; Sephora).

The Urban Decay “Alice in Wonderland” Book of Shadows

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Post Pic

The fashion industry is in love with the fantastically outrageous costumes and makeup in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Designers like Stella McCartney and Tom Binns have created lines inspired by Burton’s 3D interpretation, and now Urban Decay has joined the mix. The “Alice in Wonderland” Book of Shadows Palette is available at Sephora ($52) and includes 16 best-selling shadows, all appropriately renamed to include Chessur, White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, Queen, etc. Also in the box, you’ll find a travel size of the Eyeshadow Primer Potion and two 24/7 Eye Pencils. What makes this little box so delightful, though, is the pop-up scene of Alice in the mushroom forest. When I opened it, it reminded me of a cross between my first ballerina jewelry box and my first makeup kit. Only this time, the makeup is way better and I actually know how to apply it.

Making the Best of 2010

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Post Pic

Resolutions have never been my thing. I’m all about making positive changes in my life, but I’ve never understood how to choose only one improvement for the year and actually get the job done. So, in a valiant attempt to understand how the whole “resolution” business works, I’m getting some help. This Wednesday, Style Chicago is having their 3rd annual Resolutions 2010 event at the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower (20 E Chestnut Street), where experts will assist me in choosing and sticking with my New Year resolution. In addition to motivating me to better myself, the event includes lots of goodies: cocktails by X-Rated Fusion Liqueur and wines by Bin 36, hors d’oeuvres by Café des Architectes, free mini-spa services, makeup by MAC Cosmetics, and fitness and lifestyle advice. I predict, though, that my resolution won’t involve drinking or eating less because I’ll definitely indulge in those Bin 36 wines and Café des Architectes appetizers. Yum!

VIP tickets ($45 for the 1st 250 ticket buyers) will get you a goodie bag with an estimated value of $250, plus food, drinks and services, and general admission tickets ($35) will get you food, drinks and services. Both ticket options are still available, but the event is expected to sell out. Purchase tickets here.

Resolutions 2010: Wednesday, January 27 from 6-9pm

Green Beauty

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Post Pic

Clockwise from upper left: Train Case, Overnight Bag, 5-piece Brush Set & Bag, 6-piece Brush Set,
Cosmetic Bag, Cleansing Sponges, Foundation Brush, Eye Shading Brush, and Retractable Kabuki

I’m all about preserving our beautiful planet, but I wouldn’t consider myself “green” in the beauty department. I’ve tried many times to hop on the eco beauty bandwagon, but I haven’t found a variety of such products that really work for me. Last week, however, I was sent an EcoTools by Alicia Silverstone package with various makeup brushes and cosmetic cases that may just become part of my grooming routine.

I was shocked by how professional and soft the “cruelty-free” brushes are, especially given their low price point. Each one—including a powder, blush, foundation, eyeliner, eye shadow, lash/brow groomer, and retractable kabuki brush—is made completely with natural and recycled bamboo, aluminum, and synthetic takion bristles. With how sensitive my skin gets in winter’s harsh wind and the indoor’s drying heat, I need makeup brushes that won’t add to my skin qualms. I tried these tools out, and, surprisingly, my makeup glided on flawlessly and the bristles couldn’t be more comfortable. My favorite is the “6-piece Brush Set,” which includes a blush brush, eyeliner brush, lash/brow groomer, and concealer brush housed in a natural cotton and hemp case.

As for the eco cosmetic cases: Aside from the adorable display of flora and fauna on the bags’ exterior, they come with some serious packing power. Since these bags arrived just in time for my holiday travels, I used the opportunity to see what the “Train Case” and “Overnight Bag” could do. I actually found myself packing more toiletries (imagine that!) than I normally do just because each one gave me the extra space to do so. Adding to the travel convenience, inside each bag there are detachable mini-cases. Between my collection of Lancôme gift-with-purchases and luggage sets, I’ve collected my fair share of petite travel cases. These allow me the most packing freedom.

It looks like eco beauty products do have a place on my vanity after all.

Prices range from $4-$20.

Sugar Plums

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Post Pic

Black nail polish isn’t for everyone. Its goth chic vibe can be a tough look to pull off, but if you’re wanting a dark, dramatic hue that’s slightly more ladylike, a deep plum is a lovely compromise. Its sultry mix of punk and sweet takes the gloominess of the black and makes it into a velvetly shade perfect for fall. For a plum polish that’s daring and urbane, try Essie’s “Sexy Divide” ($8; shown above) or Sephora’s “Pure Plum” ($6).
