Trend Alert: Brogues (Oxford Shoes)

Given the popularity of towering heels with exotic skins and embellishments, it’s refreshing to see a classic, simplistic style back in the spotlight! If you haven’t noticed, menswear has been a popular inspiration among designers, and consequently, oxfords are making a huge comeback. They may look like a pair of your grandpa’s favorite shoes, but they still have a refined, vintage-y feel that’s totally classy when worn the right way. Built for casual wear with jeans or chinos, for example, these shoes can be easily dressed up as well. For spring, pair your oxfords with a variety of other popular items, such as a floral dress with stockings or boyfriend jeans and a blazer. My personal favorite: a pair of brown or gold oxfords added to boyfriend jeans; a long, white tank top under a gray crop top; a black boyfriend blazer; and an oversized black handbag. Though you may think oxfords aren’t the easiest shoes to pull off, their versatility and expression make them a no-brainer for spring. Here’s a look at some of my favorites styles.

Layer Tights for a New Look

Tights by A’GACI

Textured tights are one of the season’s hottest trends. From lace to fishnets, these stylish accessories can transform a look with little effort, but when the temperature plummets, a thin layer of nylon doesn’t always cut it. The textured patterns don’t provide much coverage, so why not layer your tights for a warmer (and cutting edge!) look? Simply add a crochet or lace style atop opaque tights, and the individuality is endless. Mix and match different patterns and colors, like A’GACI’s (107 S State Street) “Crochet Lace” tights in purple ($6.50; shown above right) with the solid black tights ($5.50) or Hue’s “Lacy Net” over the “Super Opaque” in “Claret Red” (both $12.50; Bloomindale’s).

Toting Around Town

Chicago women love their Longchamp totes. The bags’ durability, classic shapes, and various colors make them a worthy carry-all for work and travel. Sometimes, though, we need a little bag variety on our streets, so we explored some other nylon totes that are hip, versatile and just plain cool.

(Clockwise from upper left) 1. Metallic accessories can get really loud, but this gold bag by LeSportsac ($78; bloomingdales.com) has a soft hue that gives it the right amount of sass to jazz up your daily threads. 2. If you go for a more muted look, this “plumeria” Cole Haan ($198; nordstrom.com) tote does double duty with its reversible design. For day, use the bag’s nylon shell; then for night, switch to the leather side! 3. When your day’s work requires toting around a laptop, cell, day planner, portfolio, etc., you need a bag that really hauls. This black BCBG Max Azria bag ($248; bcbg.com) has the means, plus its multiple handles allow you to carry it in a way that’s comfortable. 4. A classic print and shape is a winning combination of longevity and style, and this black and white Burberry bag ($650; nordstrom.com) with patent trim has it all. This is an investment bag that will remain in your closet for years as your go-to casual carry-all. 5. If you have a serious case of work-bag boredom, this Marc by Marc Jacobs leopard print tote ($168; bloomindales.com) is your remedy. It’s puurfect with a camel, black or brown coat—or get a little wilder and pair it with a bright pink or purple coat.
