Ladies Night Out

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Post Pic

Thursday night attracted hordes of ladies to StyleChicago.com’s “An Evening of Modern Beauty.” Set in the lavish W Chicago City Center, guests circled around more than 25 fashion, beauty and lifestyle vendors while sipping complimentary martinis, wine and beer. Pampering and entertainment was the universal theme as women engaged in various feminine indulgences, such as eyelash extensions, massages, shopping and product sampling. The vendors included the likes of K. Amato, Fusion Beauty, Massage Envy, Trish McEvoy, Xtreme Lashes and Swaby. Aside from the obvious entertainment, tasty drinks and outstanding venue, women enjoyed a ladies night out and, maybe more importantly, the overflowing goodie bags. Stuffed with $250 worth of fashion, beauty and food products, the bags were worthy of the ticket price alone—something that’s hard to come by in this economy. Style Chicago outdid itself with this annual event that was bigger than last year’s and all the more impressive.

GAVIN Boutique + Lipstick Dinosaur

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Post Pic

This Friday night (6-9pm), GAVIN Boutique and Lipstick Dinosaur team up for an unconventional fashion preview. The unlikely pair makes an interesting partnership that fuses the contemporary labels at GAVIN and the vintage treasures of Lipstick Dinosaur. The Dana Hotel rooftop bar, the Vertigo Sky Lounge (2 W Erie Street), creates a chic backdrop for a night that displays Lipstick Dinosaur’s vintage necklaces, belts, earrings, brooches, rings and bracelets against GAVIN’s summer and fall selections. Models will roam the lounge donning the fashions that also highlight Lipstick Dinosaur’s month-long pop-up shop in GAVIN. This evening, though, is a celebration of the new and old joining together for a night of complimentary cocktails and fashion eye candy.

Little Black Dress Party

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Post Pic

A little black dress is the quintessential wardrobe staple. Every woman has one. Every woman needs one. There’s plenty of reasons to pull your LBD out of the closet, from a first date to a cocktail party. Regardless of the form—including chiffon, satin, cotton and more—the function is the same: look fabulous for any occasion. Well, here’s another occasion to wear your favorite LBD. This Thursday night, the Chicago Fashion Foundation is having a Little Black Dress party. From 7-10pm at Casey Moran’s (3660 N Clark Street), the party calls Chicago’s fashion-loving ladies to done their LBDs for a night of fashion and fun. The evening will entail a best-dressed contest that will award little black dress-ers with a bottle of LBD wine, complimentary party packages at Casey Moran’s, gift baskets and more. Also, the first 75 people to arrive will receive goodie bags, and CFF will have specialty cocktails, martinis and sangrias for all the guests. Tickets are $25 for non-CFF members and $20 for members and LBD wearers. Get tickets here.

The Fashion District: Vintage

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Post Pic

The satisfaction of hunting down one-of-a-kind vintage finds is uniquely satisfying in this world of mass marketed consumerism. Vintage garments and accessories elevate a look to a whole new level with their individuality and character. This is why we take particular interest in vintage-inspired events. On Wednesday from 7-11:00pm, District Bar will present the 4th installment of The Fashion District. Retro Rewind, as this particular night is titled, showcases the vintage fashion Chicago has to offer, including Deliciously Vintage, Little Black Dress Vintage, Fashion Fusion, and Funky Bro Vintage. Whether you like the subtly sexy fashions from the 50’s or the daringly bold fads from the 60’s, The Fashion District promises something for every modern girl wanting to dip into the past.

In addition to a runway show at 8pm, the night also features half price bottles of wine and salads.

Fashion Salvation

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

post thumbnail

Last Wednesday night, I attended Fashion Salvation, a runway show at Salvage One. I always wanted an excuse to lounge in the unconventionally stylish space—a graveyard of architectural relics—and this show provided the opportunity to do so. Surrounded by larger than life Grecian columns, carousel horses, and monstrous neon signs, the evening immediately took an enchanting tone. Produced by Y.E.S. (Young Executives for Success) to raise money for Dress for Success, a program dedicated to supplying professional attire to disadvantaged woman, the event was impressive from beginning to end. Juggling a cilantro-spiked cocktail and tasty canapé, I took my seat in one of the mismatched antique chairs surrounding a runway draped in Persian rugs. Shortly afterward, fashions from Bonnie & Clyde’s boutique, Marisa Swystun and Agga B took the stage.

A grayscale collection from Bonnie and Clyde’s was edgy, futuristic and grungy (look shown above center). Zombie-like models showcased men’s and women’s separates with modern cuts of leather, jersey and denim that lay somewhere between street urchin, avant-garde and Edward Scissorhands. The gauzy tanks, long tube skirts, fitted jackets and thin sweaters were both practical and appealing. With the addition of clunky combat boots, bug-ish magnifying eyewear, and gothic makeup, the show’s aesthetic was reminiscent of one Mr. Rick Owens.

Marisa Swystun’s collection had more movement and shape (above left). Silky, feminine dresses, skirts and hand-printed kimono tops are clearly her specialty. It was as if she created each colorful, airy piece specifically for a hot summer evening. The collection covered a wide range of styles, from floor-length, bohemian frocks to shorter, more conservative cocktail attire. While soft and sweet was the overall theme, the element of surprise was still there. One-shoulder numbers and zipper detailing showed some attitude.

Like a harmonious fusion of Bonnie and Clyde’s edginess and Marisa’s glamour, Agga B’s looks (above right) fell somewhere between feminine and dangerous. Her perfectly executed designs came in sultry neutrals, but with a pinch of glitz. Hot pants, sequined bodysuits, and silk capes were the central theme for her cohesive collection. The combination of sporty and glam, incredible use of material, and fresh silhouettes brought to mind what gripped me about Prada’s spring runway. Agga’s professional styling skills were evident throughout: pant-less models armed with red lipstick and dark sunnies helped create a femme-fatale-meets-bathing-beauty vibe. Very sexy and very chic.

Though all entirely different, each featured collection was dense with creativity and artistry. While the spirit Salvage One added its own energy to the event, it was the show-stopping designs that really made magic that night.

The First Style Admirer Fashion Party

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Post Pic

Since Style Admirer’s launch in October 2009, we’ve desperately tried finding the time to plan our first fashion event. Despite our restrictive day planner overflowing with various events, editorials, photo shoots, and more, we finally found it! The premiere Style Admirer fashion party will be this Friday, June 25, and we can’t wait to share it with you, Chicago fashionistas. We’re partnering with the phenomenal American designer (and SAIC alum!), Cynthia Rowley, and Chicago’s favorite wine bar, Bin 36, to throw a stylish soiree for those who love designer shopping, vino and mingling. The fashion and wine tasting party will kick off Taste of Chicago at Cynthia’s Bucktown boutique (1653 North Damen Avenue) from 6-8pm. While shopping her Spring/Summer 2010 collection, sample red and white wines from Bin’s impressive cellar and get styling advice from the Style Admirer team. See you there! RSVP to Chicagoevents@CynthiaRowley.com.

A special thanks to the Cynthia Rowley and Bin 36 teams for all their help and support.
