Gilt-Free Shopping Event

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Post Pic

Shopping online via Gilt Groupe comes naturally nowadays, but the experience lacks the tangibility so many shoppers crave. For one day here in Chicago, though, that’ll change. On Saturday, March 5, the local edition of Gilt City is having a warehouse sale at The Ivy Room at Tree Studios (12 E Ohio Street) in the Gold Coast. From 10am to 6pm, swing by and shop the likes of Zac Posen, Chloe, Vera Wang, Tory Burch, Kate Spade and many more for up to 75% off. The luxury discounter will be selling tickets to the event starting today, February 24, at 12pm. The price is just $5 to attend–well worth the cost considering what you’ll save on designer duds.

Isaac Mizrahi to Set Up Shop

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Post Pic

Chicago’s Rush Street is poised to get another boutique amid its array of luxury shopping destinations. Isaac Mizrahi is the latest designer rumored set up shop in the Gold Coast, according to the Chicago Tribune. This would be the first store outside Manhattan for the celeb designer commonly known for his namesake fashion line, status as Creative Director of Liz Claiborne, affordable line at Target and his eccentric personality displayed on Bravo’s “The Fashion Show.” He’s said to be in negotiations to convert Gap’s high-end denim store, 1969 (939 N Rush Street), which didn’t renew its lease last month.

This is a move other labels, including Vince and Marc Jacobs, have recently made, so could this spot be the new home for Isaac’s work? With a 25-year-old career on the upswing after fashion triumphs and tribulations, there’s no question he has the wherewithal to excel in here in the Windy City. And we’ll welcome him with open arms.

A Luxury Garage Sale

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Post Pic

We all know the feeling: we open our overflowing closet and realize it desperately needs editing. Whether you don’t have the time or the know-how, there’s a darling duo here to help. Best friends Lindsay Segal and Brielle Buchberg of Luxury Garage Sale, combine their skills in sales and styling to offer Chicagoans a streamlined wardrobe, all while making you some extra spending money.

To do this, they come to your home to sift through your designer duds and pull out what’s sellable (with your approval, of course). They then price, photograph and sell the items–for free. After the clothing and accessories are sold via eBay, antique markets and more, Lindsey and Brielle ship the merchandise and collect a 35% commission.

Next weekend, see what the ladies have to offer–including labels from Christian Louboutin and Chanel to Marc by Marc Jacobs and Theory–their two-day shopping event. Held Feb. 12-13 from 10:30am to 5:30pm at Galleria Unico (1936 W Division Street, 2nd Floor), 10% of the sale’s proceeds go to Dress for Success.

With Luxury Garage Sale, you’ll never dread spring cleaning again.

Closely Knitted

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Post Pic

Year after year, knitwear is a necessary wardrobe staple. This year, though, bulky textures and bold styles separate the au courant styles from the outdated. Such new approaches to sweater dressing–including cropped hems, oversized shapes and unexpected cuts–put a spin on the otherwise conventional look.

Nothing is more practical, or fashion-forward, right now than a giant sweater. Thankfully, some of the most popular styles are blanketed looks and menswear-inspired cardigans, commonly referred to as the grandpa or boyfriend sweater for their relaxed look. There’s also a rainbow of hues to keep things interesting, including pastels that inject a shot of color into the gloomy winter months.

Give the vast variety of styles out there, the chunky knit’s functionality is endless. Plus, it’s so easy to wear. Try layering a boyfriend cardigan with slim, feminine pieces, or leave it open and belted. Cropped sweaters are best worn during the winter with maxi lengths and high-waists. Finally, chunky knits and slim pants are a guaranteed winning combo, with they’re urban yet sophisticated feel.

Check out some of our favorite knits for Winter 2010:

1. Aleksandr Manamis belted, backless sweater ($630; Sofia Vintage; 72 E Oak Street)
2. See by Chloe cardigan ($460; lagarconne.com)
3. Wilfred gradient sweater ($115; Aritzia; 835 N Michigan Avenue)
4. Coral knitted top ($65, Topshop)
5.  Chunky cable turtleneck sweater ($248; Intermix)

Trending: Hard Clutches

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

Post Pic

The right handbag has the power to make an outfit or add just the right amount of oomph. Hard clutches can do either. Whether they’re an ensemble’s main attraction or the cherry on top, these tiny gems pack beauty, style and attitude. Large enough for a compact, lipstick and cellphone, hard clutches won’t accommodate bag clutter, but they do leave room for major style power. The options are infinite–be it bedazzled or reptilian, outrageous or classic–and they’re gaining popularity on the street. Though currently a big trend, these accessories can still add an unexpected element to a look. The first thing to remember is don’t think of them as strictly formalwear. They can be paired with jeans as easily as they can go with a gown.

Clockwise from upper left:

1. Samurai gold embroidered skull clutch (Alexander McQueen; $2,295)
2. Studded leather clutch (Matthew Williamson; $718)
3. Geometric beaded clutch (Aldo; $50)
4. Silver lizard-print clutch (Nine West; $30)
5. Rocio clutch with wood and snakeskin detail (farfetch.com; $610)
6. Nicole Miller silver beaded clutch (Lori’s Shoes; 824 W Armitage Avenue; $175)

Mail-Order Menswear

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Post Pic

Let’s face it. When it comes to shopping, men often lack the stamina and patience to get the job done right. They prefer assistance (enter: girlfriend, wife, stylist) and simplicity. So, Chicago’s own Trunk Club, provides that. The personal shopper/stylist/delivery service gets to know your man before handpicking and shipping designer threads to his door. No game-time interruptions necessary.

The service begins with an online questionnaire that details his size, style and needs before submitting it for review. Then, Trunk Club contacts him directly to customize the goods. The consult is free–which often takes place on Skype–and so is the shipping. The trunk costs about $500 to $1,000 and includes anything from suits to sweaters to shoes by designers like Ben Stein, Earnest Sewn and Autumn Cashmere. Anything he doesn’t like can be shipped back for free.

And the best part? Us ladies have more time to shop for ourselves.

Where the Wild Things Are

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Post Pic

There’s a “certain something” about animal prints. They’re sexy, statement-making and maintain their place on today’s fiercest catwalks. Designers like Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli, both of whom are notorious for their use of animal-inspired collections, never disappoint when it comes to using these feminine, exotic prints in their collections. Such options include leopard, cheetah, reptile and even birds of paradise–all symbolizing the timelessness fashion can possess. From Grace Kelly to Kate Moss, the animal trend is a favorite of style icons who embrace their wilder side. Despite the pattern, these classic prints add a retro yet playful approach to any outfit.

Leopard and snake prints are fan favorites for their chameleon-like wearability. For those who prefer a pop of color, peacock prints create an energetic, flirty look. Regardless, pair your animal print with a neutral, solid counterpart, or take a walk on the wild side and pair it with a tamed, contrasting print. Additionally, printed accessories are a subtle way to add flare to your outfit while still being refined and chic.

Not only are the animal-inspired fashions endless for Winter 2010 and Spring 2011, they’re so much fun to wear.  And isn’t that the ultimate fashion bonus?

2. Akira Black Label zebra-print dress ($77; Akira)
3. Zebra tights ($18; Topshop)
4. Patterson J. Kincaid “African Cheetah Salvador” tank dress ($76; Bloomingdales)

Eclectica Closes Its Doors

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Post Pic

Sadly, Lincoln Park’s Eclectica boutique (1006 W Armitage Avenue) is closing its doors. Owner Vika Brown made the announcement just before the New Year and is holding quite the final sale for those looking to get heavy discounts on fantastic fashion. The store’s collection of contemporary clothing—including Vika’s own line—is currently 30% off warehouse prices. In addition, jewelry and handbags by the likes of local designers Tzen and Michelle Tan are 20%-50% off.

Though this location closes at the end of February, the store will open a studio in the Loop area to continue producing custom orders. Open by appointment only, the space will be available seven days a week, where clients can work exclusively with the designer.
