There’s a trio of fashion heavy-hitters joining together to celebrate summer fashion and benefit a worthy cause. This Thursday night from 7-9pm, GUESS and Lucky magazine celebrate Spring/Summer 2010 with a private cocktail reception hosted by The Haute Closet’s April Francis, a local wardrobe consultant and blogger. Located in GUESS’s Michigan Avenue store (605 N Michigan Avenue), local tastemakers will enjoy specialty cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and mini makeovers (courtesy of Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics) while shopping GUESS’s latest collection. Guests will have the opportunity to style their own head-to-toe GUESS look to be photographed on Lucky’s Style Spotter photo set and posted to LuckyMag.com. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago, an organization dedicated to providing a safe environment for young people. Get 20% off your purchase when you donate a minimum of $5 to this organization. When the reception commences, head to Manor at 10pm for the exclusive after party, where GUESS will present a fashion show its newest threads.

Trending: Wedges

As Chicago finally heats up, I can’t wait to show off a fresh pedicure in spring’s biggest footwear trend: wedges. Though the wedge has cycled on and off the “must have” list for decades, it got its start in 1935 when Salvatore Ferragamo created the first pair. Since then, these chunky shoes have resurfaced in the ‘70s, the early ‘90s, and are now making another appearance for spring ‘10.

The wedge has an undeniable ability to lengthen and slim bare legs, and offer a relaxed alternative to heels. After all, sometimes in the laid-back days of spring and summer, heels can feel a bit too contrived. With the wedge, you can have height, comfort, and an attitude that won’t scream, “I’m trying too hard.” This season, choose a pair (or two!) that is daring and versatile.

As if it isn’t hard enough to make that choice, a wedge can range in height from one to five inches and are found in a multitude of materials (cork, leather, rope, wood) and forms (boot, strappy, mule, clog). The options really go on and on. Alexander Wang supplies his “it girl” cult following with the coveted animal print wedge. For a casual but über sexy style, Cynthia Vincent’s zip-up gladiator is made for day-to-night wear. Boho chic? Joie’s unique fringe version will look amazing with a tunic and cut-off shorts. This season, welcome the wedge back into your wardrobe with one of these styles:

1. Giuseppe Zanotti black suede star wedges ($639; Bluefly.com)
2. Cynthia Vincent “Luella” wedge ($355; Niche; 1566 N Damen Avenue)
3. MIA “Maiden” in “Sand” ($68; Lori’s Shoes; 824 W Armitage Avenue)
4. Alexander Wang “Alla” wedge mule in leopard ($650; Alexander Wang)
5. Miu Miu leather espadrilles ($585; net-a-porter.com)
6. Guess “Kinai” wedge ($99; Guess)
7. Joie “Rock Steady Fringe Wedge” ($345; Cusp)

The bracelet watch has transformed the way we’re wearing timepieces. Inspired by men’s styles, these oversized accessories are more like statement bangles than functioning clocks. The gold-toned options have a ghetto-fab flashiness that’s brought down to size with classic shapes—a combination that delivers everyday wearability with less fuss than you may think. With their distinct edge and chic flare, they look amazing alone or with a wrist-full of gold bangles and bracelets. Here are some versatile yet oh-so-striking styles that can go from the office to the dance floor in seconds.

1. Freelook watch ($330; Stitch; 1723 N Damen Avenue)
2. DKNY watch with mother-of-pearl face ($185; dkny.com)
3. Michael Kors watch ($180; Macy’s)
4. Guess chronograph watch ($135; Guess)
5. Fossil chronograph watch ($125; Fossil)
6. Marc by Marc Jacobs “Henry” watch ($225; Nordstrom)

If over-the-knee boots still conjure images of Julia Robert’s thigh-high patent boots in Pretty Woman, then it’s time to rethink this footwear trend. You don’t need Julia’s 44-inch legs to rock this look, and you can do it completely void of any “hooker boot” connotations as well. With the bevy of styles, colors, and fabrics, these sexy, effortlessly chic boots are perfectly wearable—as flats and heels—and stand out in any wardrobe.

Calvin Klein’s “Mayson” boots ($220; zappos.com): These have an elastic cuff that hits just below the knee, which keeps the soft suede from sliding down your legs.

Type Z’s “Archer” boots ($155; zappos.com): The epitome of sexy heels, these suede boots will elongate and slim your legs, making them appear as if they go on forever.

Progetto boots ($326; Lori’s Shoes): Urban meets rural in the form of these brown suede boots. The feminine over-the-knee silhouette is a striking contrast to this rustic riding boot.

Steve Madden’s “Xenonn” boots ($170; Steve Madden): Bound to draw attention, these purple suede boots are hip yet glamorous with the platform sole, slouched shape, and tied cuff.

Eric Michael’s “Vogue” boots ($250; Nordstrom): A girl needs options, and these boots supply it. The adjustable buckle allows for an OTK style, or it can be cuffed for a different look.

See, over-the-knee boots aren’t as over-the-top as previously perceived.
