Topshop to Open in Chicago
Monday, September 27th, 2010
Admittedly so, Chicago lives in the shadow of NYC fashion. However, its growth is evident. The proof of this lies in news like Topshop’s announcement that it will open a store right here in the Second City. Opening in “early autumn” next year on Michigan Avenue, according to Crain’s Chicago Business via a Topshop rep, this will be the second US location to date (the first in NYC’s Soho), with locations being scouted in other major cities such as Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco.
Following the opening of Zara on Michigan Avenue last year, Topshop promises to be a worthy competitor with its uber trendy garb. However, boasting a higher price point than its two cheaper neighbors Forever 21 and H&M, Chicago’s savvy shoppers may ask: Why pay more? For me, I pay for the fashion-forward designs and conceptual approach of Topshop’s often unconventional collections even if the quality leaves much to be desired. After all, trends are fleeting, right? While I don’t like throwing money down the drain, it’s not like Topshop built its reputation on selling classic clothing built for repeat seasons. That said, there’s no doubt I’ll take advantage of my soon-to-be unlimited access to Chicago’s Topshop—even if the selection’s censored for us “conservative” Midwesterns.

Trending: Slouchy Pants
Tuesday, May 25th, 2010
From left to right: American Apparel “Micro-mesh Jumper Pant” ($40); H&M paisley harem trouser ($30); Topshop “Draped Pocket Hareem Trousers” ($80); Rachel Comey Rust Pants ($340; P. 45; 1643 N Damen Avenue); Tsumori Chisato printed trousers ($1,010; Opening Ceremony); and Lia Kes pant ($270; Tangerine,1719 N Damen Avenue)
Move over skinny jeans. There’s a new silhouette in town: the slouchy pant. I first discovered the relaxed, voluminous fit on my last trip to Europe and felt like I unearthed a buried treasure. The liberating trend proves that bold femininity doesn’t always translate into curve-revealing garments. What makes a look truly alluring, after all, is confidence, not over-the-top sex appeal. This season’s slouchy pant conveys just that in a way that’s undeniably cool and perfectly disheveled—never stuffy.
Circa 1985, MC Hammer brought the baggy harem pant to the masses. Flash forward to 2010, there’s an abundance of slouchy styles to explore once again. Solid colors and moderate cuts are the more conservative way to wear this daring trouser. Topshop and Lia Kes have super wearable neutrals, while Rachel Comey’s vibrant burnt orange pant bridges the gap between an everyday style and a strategically worn statement-maker. For a dramatic approach, try a printed fabric, or a fearless mesh à la American Apparel. For those stand out summer events, push the envelope even further with Tsumori Chisato’s psychedelic print or H&M’s paisley.
When rockin’ these styles, keep your waistband visible and your ensemble balanced. Do this by pairing them with tucked-in slim tops that show off your waistline and avoid an overly baggy look. A silk blouse works for the office and a basic tee will get you through any occasion. For more street credibility, attempt a cutting-edge lace bodysuit or cotton crop top. Though this pant can be an intimidating look to pull off, trust me, it’s never been so easy to look cool and chic at the same time.

Sonia Rykiel for H&M
Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010
Since H&M’s recent controversies, including throwing perfectly good clothing in the garbage and promoting “organic” clothes that aren’t really organic, the brand’s publicists have been doing some serious damage control. But I think the ray of sunshine that is Sonia Rykiel may have what it takes to lighten the mood. Her women’s and girls’ clothing line for H&M will be hitting stores February 20 and bringing with it some perfectly Sonia sweaters, tops, shorts, accessories and more, all in a lively palette of pink, yellow and black. Since I’m not much of a rhinestone person, I’m not really feelin’ those details, but I do hope to get my hands on that drawstring jumper.

H&M’s New Garden Collection
Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Dresses, both $49.95
On a snowy day like today, who couldn’t use a little fashion pick-me-up? The new Garden Collection from H&M is a summery treat that certainly brightened our day a bit. It boasts bold hues, pretty pastels, and flowery prints—as abstract patterns, rosettes, and 70’s hippie-like embroidery—that cut through this dreariness and remind us the sun will shine again. The collection includes chiffon dresses, smocks, billowy tops, khaki shorts, and cotton tanks as well as a beige anorak and ruffed wrap dress we can’t wait to get our hands on. In addition to the airy femininity of these pieces, everything is made with organic and recycled materials. Not bad, huh? The Garden Collection hits stores in late March, so in the mean time, we’ll daydream of the warmer days and new spring wardrobe to come.

Finally! Jimmy Choo for H&M Hits Stores
Friday, November 13th, 2009
Gray suede dress, $249; zebra flats, $70; blue suede dress, $249, and studded belt, $60; bracelet, $40; black stiletto, $129; leopard print bag, $129; pink clutch, $60; black long-sleeve mini dress, $129; thigh-high boots, $299
H&M has thrown their Jimmy Choo collaboration in our faces for far too long, and tomorrow we finally get to raid the merchandise! Chicago is one of the select cities blessed with the Choo, but the Michigan Avenue location is the only store selling it. Shoppers will be lined up in hopes of adding the famous label to their wardrobes at a fraction of the cost for the real thing. Get there early, though, because the first 160 shoppers will be given bracelets with allotted time slots to shop the accessories, shoes and bags. After two hours, the store will open to all shoppers, allowing everyone else their grab the remaining goods. If you are shopper number 161 and up, one consolation is that everyone can purchase only one of each product. In other words, they can buy the entire collection, but no more than one of any given item. We have our eye on the black long-sleeve mini dress and thigh-high leather boots! Good luck, everyone!
