Winter Wonderland

The weather isn’t quite so frightful when the season brings cozy fashion perks. With nods to afternoons spent nestled in a log cabin sipping cocoa by a crackling fire, we can keep warm in Nordic-inspired knitwear, patterns and accessories. This rustic trend takes us from casual to party-ready while maintaining a down-to-earth sensibility that’s necessary during Chicago’s lake effect snow storms. We look forward to the prospect of trading in our overdone metallics and getting back to basics with country-chic pieces, including chunky cardigan sweaters, weekend bags and cable-knit accessories. Whether you’re on the slopes in Aspen or the streets of Chicago, mix and match nomad wear for a look that embodies cozy sophistication.

Cure a case of cabin fever with the items below (from left):

1. Kensie “Nomad” shawl cardigan ($78; Nordstrom)
2. Chunky knit scarf ($60; Topshop)
3. K.Amato wood and gold leaf ring ($30. K.Amato; 1229 W Diversey Avenue)
4. Steven Alan plaid dress ($248)
5. “Everest Overnight” bag ($395; Rag & Bone)
6. Minnetonka fringe moccasins ($88; J.Crew)
7. Hue tweed cable-knit socks ($14; Bare Necessities)
8. Patterned beret ($36; Penelope’s; 1913 W Division Street)
9. Staring at Stars faux fur vest ($98; Urban Outfitters)

If you’re absorbed in the Chicago fashion community, chances are you’ve heard of the Stitches Fashion Program. If you haven’t heard of Stitches, its mission is to help Chicago’s fashion entrepreneurs establish effective sales and financing so that they may blossom right here in the Second City. Tomorrow night, the program sponsors Fear No Art and Fashion, a celebration of art, fashion, innovation and creativity. Saper Laws Fashion, Media, and Entertainment Practices will co-host the event from 6:30pm to 8:30pm with Dr. Julia Rahn, owner of Flourish Studios, and Elysabeth Alfano, creator, executive producer and host of WTTW11’s Fear No Art Chicago. Along with hors d’oeuvres and fine wines, enjoy the company of other Chicago creatives in Flourish’s beautiful space (3020 N Lincoln Avenue). Also purchase goods from Stitches Fashion Program designers, including K. Amato, Kate Boggiano and Mata Traders, and enjoy an informal fashion show featuring the latest collection by Lauren Lein.

Ladies Night Out

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Post Pic

Thursday night attracted hordes of ladies to StyleChicago.com’s “An Evening of Modern Beauty.” Set in the lavish W Chicago City Center, guests circled around more than 25 fashion, beauty and lifestyle vendors while sipping complimentary martinis, wine and beer. Pampering and entertainment was the universal theme as women engaged in various feminine indulgences, such as eyelash extensions, massages, shopping and product sampling. The vendors included the likes of K. Amato, Fusion Beauty, Massage Envy, Trish McEvoy, Xtreme Lashes and Swaby. Aside from the obvious entertainment, tasty drinks and outstanding venue, women enjoyed a ladies night out and, maybe more importantly, the overflowing goodie bags. Stuffed with $250 worth of fashion, beauty and food products, the bags were worthy of the ticket price alone—something that’s hard to come by in this economy. Style Chicago outdid itself with this annual event that was bigger than last year’s and all the more impressive.
