Modern Vintage
Monday, November 1st, 2010
In my opinion, there’s no better way to spend a fall afternoon than hunting for vintage treasures—and lots of ‘em. On Sunday, October 24, I was one of hundreds who browsed the monstrous selection of one-of-a-kind accessories and trinkets at Modern Vintage, a semi-annual, two-day shopping event. This event was housed in a two-story warehouse of jewelry, handbags, clothes, furs, home accoutrements and more from vendors that ventured to Chicago from around the country. Situated in the West Loop, Modern Vintage was like rummaging through your grandmother’s closet. That is, if she owned an unbeatable collection of Chanel bags, glitzy costume jewelry, intricately beaded tunics and rare Louis Vuitton Trunks—all the hand-me-downs you can’t wait to get your hands on. I found accessories to complete outfits, new designer bags to add to a collection and garments from decades past that are fantastically still relevant today.

Mad for Mad Men Fashion

From left to right: Louis Vuitton, Prada, Rochas and Marc Jacobs
Drama and scandal aren’t the only captivating things about Mad Men. Betty’s, Joan’s and Don’s wardrobes are leading characters themselves, attracting viewers with body con silhouettes and perfectly polished style. Now the clothes that have been driving us mad for three seasons are taking a starring role on the runway as well. For Fall 2010, the 60’s era is revisited via designs by Louis Vuitton, Prada, Nina Ricci and Rochas. Even stores like Banana Republic are taking cue from the Sunday night hit. Shapes such as structured bodices and full skirts in luxe fabrics put sexy, ladylike fashion back in the spotlight when menswear-inspired collections have become the norm. As we transition into a new season, we welcome this cinematic reference, trip back in time and return of womanly fashion. Thank you, Sterling Cooper Draper Price.

On a day-to-day basis, this gadget is literally at our side. So, why not view it as a stylish accessory? The iPhone is one of the most commonly used phones, and, consequently, there are a bevy of fashionable cases to choose from. With so many choices like cases vs. skins and leather vs. plastic, you can extend your own style to your treasured lifeline. Here’s a few we love:
