Modern Vintage
Monday, November 1st, 2010
In my opinion, there’s no better way to spend a fall afternoon than hunting for vintage treasures—and lots of ‘em. On Sunday, October 24, I was one of hundreds who browsed the monstrous selection of one-of-a-kind accessories and trinkets at Modern Vintage, a semi-annual, two-day shopping event. This event was housed in a two-story warehouse of jewelry, handbags, clothes, furs, home accoutrements and more from vendors that ventured to Chicago from around the country. Situated in the West Loop, Modern Vintage was like rummaging through your grandmother’s closet. That is, if she owned an unbeatable collection of Chanel bags, glitzy costume jewelry, intricately beaded tunics and rare Louis Vuitton Trunks—all the hand-me-downs you can’t wait to get your hands on. I found accessories to complete outfits, new designer bags to add to a collection and garments from decades past that are fantastically still relevant today.

Fashion Explosion
Sunday, October 18th, 2009
If you weren’t at the Modern Vintage Chicago Fall Fashion and Jewels Explosion this weekend, I’m sorry to say, but you missed out. The event was so massive, it took three days (Friday-Sunday) and 26,000 square feet to get the job done. Vendors from Chicago and around the country set up shop on the second floor of the West Loop warehouse-like space, where shoppers could spend hours sifting through the amazingly diverse selection.

Modern Vintage did a seamless job of fusing two commonly separate events: vintage shopping and contemporary designer shopping. The vintage collection included clothing, estate and costume jewelry, handbags, shoes, hats, belts and scarves, which kept me shopping for days (literally, I was there Friday and Sunday!). There were mid-century, Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Victorian items as well as ‘60s and ‘70s designer treasures, such as Halston, Chanel, Hermès, YSL, Oscar de la Renta, Pucci and Dior.

If you’re not into used goods, The Indie Designer Selection featured contemporary clothing, jewelry, bags, shoes, hats, belts and scarves that would have introduced you to some new talent and added to your wardrobe. Even local designers, including Swaby (see black handbag above), Heidi Hess and Double Stitch, got in on the action.
Thankfully, if you weren’t in attendance this weekend, you’ve got another chance. Modern Vintage will host its second event in April, so be sure to set aside the weekend and make up for lost time.
