Trending: Rainbow Brights

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Post Pic

Spring always gives Chicago a positive, energy-infused attitude adjustment. What better way to commemorate this long-awaited mood swing than with a full spectrum of rainbow brights? This season, add life back into your wardrobe with playful hues, like tangerine, hot pink, electric blue, sunshine yellow and–my favorite–neon green.

There may be many bold colors to choose from, but there’s even more ways to incorporate them into your look. Instead of the predictable graphic prints of seasons past, try one of spring’s biggest trends: colorblocking. Mix high-impact separates in different hues to wow on the street. If that sounds too loud for your taste,  just incorporate color with small accents like a skinny belt, cross-body bag and nail polish. Minimal classics and monochromatic whites are an immaculate backdrop for pops of color. Or, for the disco queens out there, embrace the 70’s revival with glittery, silky fabrics paired with gold accessories.

Whichever style resonates with you, don’t be intimated by vibrant hues. They have the innate power to bring excitement, life and playfulness into your look. To do just that, check out some of our favorite fashion pick-me-ups below (clockwise from left):

1. Lavin Summer 2011 satin gown in poppy
2. American Apparel “Manilla” nail polish ($6; American Apparel)
3. Nixon “Marmalade Marble Vega” watch ($60; Nixon)
4. Jil Sander long pleated skirt ($895; Neiman Marcus)
5. Rebecca Minkoff “Grape Studded Rockette” bag ($150; Gavin; 1939 Central Street, Evanston)
6. Issa halter gown ($714; shopbop.com)
7. Rag & Bone cobalt denim legging ($185; Intermix)
8. Logan blue metallic platform sandals ($160; Topshop)
9. Petit Bateau yellow raincoat ($144; Penelope’s, 1913 W Division Street)
10. Asos lime belt ($14, asos.com)

On Point

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

post thumbnail

I never thought I’d support a revival of the pointy-toe shoe, but after years of round shapes and months of clunky boots, this classic style couldn’t be more refreshing. Unlike most footwear trends that rotate out of the closet after a season or two, the right pair of pumps are an investment that will reemerge for decades. Why? They’re timeless, versatile and loved by woman of all ages.

Basically, pointy-toe pumps equip us shoe collectors with all the practical reasons to justify coming home with another box of Manolos. Pointy toes transition from season to season, and more importantly for modern ladies, from day to night. There’re an array of styles–from d’Orsay stilettos to unconventional straps to kitten heels–that suit every occasion and taste. Whether your style is classic, edgy, glam or preppy, and you’re headed to work, date or cocktail reception, you’ll delight in all the pointy styles available for spring.

Practicality aside, though, there’s another reason these shoes are a must have: attitude. Ladylike yet fierce, these heels have a way of saying, “I’m sweet and classy, but get the hell out of my way.” Ranging from conservative ‘50s styles to full-out mod, pointy toes can tone down or amp up a look with their leg-lengthening silhouette, eye-catching embellishments, austere cuts and slew of delicious colors.

Simply choose one (or two, or three…) of the hundreds styles and pair it with cocktail dresses, pencil skirts, tapered trousers, boyfriend jeans, miniskirts, et al. One can’t deny the resurgence of this timeless trend is one chic, fashionably versatile move that allows us to accent just about any outfit with pointy toes. This spring, I think you’ll all join me by saying, “Welcome back, pointy-toe pumps!”

Clockwise from upper left:

1. Schutz lavender suede pump ($214; shopbop.com). The chicest pump for spring. Understated enough for work, pretty enough for tea and fierce enough for drinks.

2. Kate Spade “Licorice” pump ($285; Shirise; 341 Park Avenue, Glencoe, IL). Basic, black and just plain sexy.

3. Valentino studded lace ankle wrap pump ($995; Neiman Marcus). Edgy and fearless. This shoe is not what you would expect from a comfortable and surprisingly versatile shoe.

4. Blue pointed pump ($90; Zara). There’s a reason Elvis wrote a song about blue suede shoes. Colorful, fun and a perfect pick-me-up to cure the winter doldrums.

5. Giuseppe Zanotti red patent leather “V” strap pump ($550; Saks Fifth Avenue). Va-va-voom! Femme fatale at its best.

6. Christian Louboutin “Pigalili 120 mm” ($3,545; Christian Louboutin). The power to stop ‘em dead in their tracks. Literally.

7. Messeca “Jesenia” pump ($110; Pump Shoes and Accessories; 1659 W Division Street). Add some swing to your swagger with these show-stoppers.

8. Topshop “Glitz Bow Point Court Shoe” ($125; Topshop). Conservative for the office, but fashion-forward for the weekend.

Winter White Out

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Post Pic

Wearing white after Labor Day is an unnecessary fashion faux pas, and the season’s winter whites is living proof of that. When winter strikes and sunlit afternoons fade into four o’clock sunsets, this trend brings light back into our lives. We all know black is the typical city garb, but it can also translate to bleak and predictable. White throws a fashion curve ball at that predictability! Bundle up in some alternatives by opting for a piece like a faux fur white shearling coat instead of a somber North Face puffy coat. Or, try monochromatic layers in a mish-mosh of textures such as a white fur vest, white cotton tank, white shorts and white tights like we saw at Erin Wasson X RVCA. Be the center of attention at your holiday party and replace your LBD with the LWD–a fashion-forward substitute. If any look ever feels too overly white, tone it down with black tights or ground the look with gray or brown accents. By embracing the season’s winter whites, your winter doesn’t have to be so dreary after all.

5. La Rock “Joplin” Rabbit Vest ($378; Neiman Marcus)
6. 3-D Flower Mesh Jumper ($84; American Apparel)
7. Mackage “Macy” Coat with shearling sleeves ($895; Perchance, 3512 N Southport Avenue)

Trending: Heeled Penny Loafers

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Post Pic

Penny loafers first emerged in the 1930s as an interpretation of the moccasin, and this season they’re making yet another comeback. Both flat and heeled, these causal slip-ons are turning their preppy sentiment into a trend du force. The heeled version—today’s footwear subject—gives the collegiate loafer a tinge of sexiness and formality that makes them versatile enough for the office and an evening out. From Balenciaga’s mirage of graphic colors to Prada’s classic style with a modern twist, heeled loafers are taking style to a new level of sophistication, class and edginess. A complement to menswear, ladylike separates and structural dresses, this versatile revival shines up like a brand new penny.

1. Alexander Wang “Hannah Velvet Loafer Boot” ($745; Alexander Wang)
2. Balenciaga by Nicholas Ghesquière crocodile moccasin pump (price available upon request; Balenciaga)
3. Prada patent loafer pump ($850; Bergdorf Goodman)
4. Stuart Weitzman ($385; Stuart Weitzman boutiques)
5. Miu Miu red platform loafer pump ($690; Neiman Marcus)

The Swimsuit Pursuit

Friday, July 16th, 2010

post thumbnail

With temperatures hovering in the 90s, we might just have a steady stream of summer weather hanging around Chicago. That said, swimsuit season is officially in full swing. For hot days appropriately spent at the pool, beach, or on a boat, a fabulous suit is the key component to lounging lazily by the water. When considering a new one- or two-piece, the right fit, proportion, cut and pattern always come into play. However, also think about how to incorporate some of the season’s biggest trends into your swimwear. The season’s extensive variety of suits makes experimenting with new styles and patterns an exciting part of the swimsuit pursuit. Take a fashion-forward approach to that itsy bitsy teeny weeny and confront the summer sun in style. H20 optional.

The Tee: Anything but Basic

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Post Pic

When I went rummaging through my closet for a trusty t-shirt to welcome the warm weather, I realized my tee collection could use a serious upgrade. Many of my once highly favored shirts are now faded, ill-fitting and not on par with the season’s tee trends. Naturally, I went looking for some new ones to replace the old!

As an essential part of a spring and summer wardrobe, t-shirts have the uncanny ability to be dressed up or down, all while keeping you nice and cool (literally and figuratively!). This season, the tee selection includes graphic, patterned, cropped, oversized, embellished and classic styles to suit your mood and diverse tee needs. With this kind of variety, the tee is now anything but basic. The styles are vast, the outfits infinite, so experiment freely this casualwear! Try a cropped tee with a pair of jersey harem pants. Or a neon-hued, oversized tee with a pair of leggings and snakeskin ballet flats. A graphic t-shirt will create an interest-adding contrast when worn with a cotton blazer, wide-leg linen pants, and a cork wedge. Check out these other styles to update your tee collection this season.

Clockwise from upper left:

1. Two-sided gray jersey tee ($25; Akira)
2. Stella McCartney oversized tee with stripes and hibiscus print ($421; farfetch.com)
3. Graham & Spencer pink and gray contrast tee ($152; Neiman Marcus)
4. Striped cropped tee ($35; Sofia Vintage)
5. Whistles Eiffel Tower t-shirt ($76; ASOS)
6. Tribal v-neck tee ($24; Urban Outfitters)

You woke up late (again), and you can’t find anything to wear (again). For those mornings when getting dressed is the day’s heftiest task, you need a no-fuss yet polished look ASAP. Thankfully the classic white button-up shirt has the versatility and sophistication to take you from frazzled to chic in mere minutes. From ruffles and rosettes to tuxedo and bib styles, this menswear-inspired staple now comes in more styles than you can count. Here are a few of our favorites that go from dressy to casual effortlessly.

Magaschoni’s blouse ($248; Neiman Marcus) has a bow and ruffles that are ladylike and professional when paired with a tailored suit. For a look that goes from work to play, combine a pencil skirt and a white shirt with romantic details, like Valentino’s “Ruffled-Rose Blouse” ($790; Bergdorf Goodman). A fitted style, like Express’s “Essential Stretch” shirt ($30), will be casual and sleek with dark denim skinny jeans and brown riding boots. Just because these shirts have their innate formality, don’t be afraid to experiment to create your own approach.

If only rolling out of bed was this easy…
