Winter Wonderland
Sunday, December 12th, 2010
The weather isn’t quite so frightful when the season brings cozy fashion perks. With nods to afternoons spent nestled in a log cabin sipping cocoa by a crackling fire, we can keep warm in Nordic-inspired knitwear, patterns and accessories. This rustic trend takes us from casual to party-ready while maintaining a down-to-earth sensibility that’s necessary during Chicago’s lake effect snow storms. We look forward to the prospect of trading in our overdone metallics and getting back to basics with country-chic pieces, including chunky cardigan sweaters, weekend bags and cable-knit accessories. Whether you’re on the slopes in Aspen or the streets of Chicago, mix and match nomad wear for a look that embodies cozy sophistication.
Cure a case of cabin fever with the items below (from left):
1. Kensie “Nomad” shawl cardigan ($78; Nordstrom)
2. Chunky knit scarf ($60; Topshop)
3. K.Amato wood and gold leaf ring ($30. K.Amato; 1229 W Diversey Avenue)

Jewel Box
Tuesday, December 7th, 2010
Let’s face it, winter in Chicago can be like living in the Arctic. Thankfully, there’s a trend heating things up. Jewel tones electrified the Fall/Winter 2010 runways of designers such as Oscar de la Renta and 3.1 Phillip Lim. The goal of this dazzling display of color is to lure ladies away from the typical black and brown. Why? The trend has the power to make any girl stand out in a crowd, especially in a sea of neutrals. And, frankly, it adds a bit of excitement to our wardrobe. By opting for colors like ruby, tanzanite and emerald, clothing and accessories get a jolt of energy and flair rather than meshing with the colorless pieces that dominate most closets. With this trend, we can turn our winter blues into a brilliant cornucopia of turquoise and fuchsia.
One crucial thing to remember when wearing this style is to keep it simple and clean. When wearing an entire outfit of jewel tones, it’s important to balance the colors to create a cohesive look. Pair a brightly patterned blouse with a solid skirt in a matching shade, or a mix a multi-hued dress with a black belt and opaque tights. But, jeweled accessories cannot be overlooked. Try bright cobalt or indigo pumps or booties, and chunky collar necklaces, chandelier earrings and bangles as an easy way to add a bit of oomph to a look.
Clockwise from left to right:

2. Coach “Kristin” satchel in emerald ($398)
3. Runway look by 3.1 Phillip Lim
4. Callula Lillibelle fuchsia petticoat dress ($594; SHE Boutique)
5. Tibi cap sleeve dress with floral print ($380; Perchance; 3512 N Southport Avenue)
6. Sam Edelman ‘Novato’ slingback in ruby red ($100; Nordstrom)

Trending: Camel Garments
Sunday, September 19th, 2010
While Chloé has been sending camel-laden garments down the runway for several seasons now, the fashion world finally named camel one of the hottest shades for Fall/Winter 2010. You can’t pick up a September issue without seeing this neutral hue dominate spread after spread. A far cry from last year’s jewel tones, it’s classic, warm and buttery. The pieces that incorporate this shade are undeniably elegant and timeless, including menswear, knits, skinny jeans and handbags.
Camel is a chameleon of a color that can create looks that range from military to office-chic. One of my favorite ways to wear this trend is to pair it with crisp whites or by opting for a monochromatic, head-to-toe camel-hued ensemble. Now, if you want a burst of color to jazz up such a neutral outfit, add one of the season’s beauty trends: Bordeaux nails and lips.
Indulge in the below luxurious neutral items on your next fall shopping binge.
Clockwise from upper left:
1. APC corduroy blazer ($400; Net-a-Porter). A luxe velvet blazer to dress up your slim cargos.
2. Chloé ribbed wool skirt ($490; Nordstrom). A form fitting skirt to offset a billowy silk blouse.
3. J Brand skinny twill jeans ($111; shopbop.com). A sleek pant to go with everything.
4. Romygold biker slash tote ($585; Intermix). An edgy handbag sporting this season’s hottest hue.
5. Mackage “Bessie” hand-woven cape ($495; Perchance; 3512 N Southport Avenue). A cozy knit in a fashion-forward shape.
6. Smythe cadet coat ($995; Nordstrom). The quintessential fall coat with impeccable tailoring.

To Dye For: Grown Up Tie Dye
Monday, July 12th, 2010
With summer underway, music festivals are in full swing. Whether you’re seeing Gaga at Lolla or counting down the days until North Coast, one trend remains ubiquitous throughout: tie dye. However, this is not your parents’ Technicolor tie dye from Woodstock. This year’s reinterpretation calls for both sleek and slouchy silhouettes in monochromatic schemes.
While many may think tie dye should have died with Hanes t-shirt experiments at summer camp, the current looks have a level of sophistication that prove this retro trend might have some staying power. With styles ranging from Gryphon’s traditional tie dye to Helmut Lang’s marbled splatters, these pieces run the gamut from funky fun to abstract art. To make the trend work for you, complement the below statement items with solid colors and fitted denim. For the more adventurous types, keep the rest of your ensemble equally daring. Think chunky heels, Lucite accessories and layered patterns.
Get Psychedelic with these looks:
Clockwise from upper left:
1. Gryphon knot dress ($250; Saks Fifth Avenue). AVersatile crew neck dress. Add some edge to with a black wedge heel.
2. “Mimi” clutch ($129; Club Monaco). A wooden handle makes this clutch especially relevant this season.
3. Vince oversized tee ($128; Intermix). This shirt’s slouchy shape is a cool silhouette on hot summer nights.
4. Rebecca Minkoff “The Clutch” ($350; Shopbop.com). During the day, wear this bag as a messenger. Come nightfall, hide the chain for a chic clutch.
5. Helmut Lang silk wrap skirt ($207; Krista K). A grown-up shape meets a playful print.
6. Elizabeth and James silk button-up shirt ($144; Nordstrom). A light and airy silk chemise: grungy yet glam.

Anchor’s Away: Nautical Style
Thursday, July 1st, 2010
This season calls for yet another revival of the ever-classic nautical trend. Evoking thoughts of tried and true Americana and the French Rivera, this preppy yet classic look is a casual counterpoint of the LBD—eternally in style. This 4th of July weekend, get on board by updating your summer wardrobe with Breton stripes, flashes of gold, wicker accessories, and boat-inspired kicks.
While yachting might be out of the budget, keep this season’s nautical look afloat by taking it to the street. The summer’s maritime-inspired pieces create a fresh approach to sea-worthy style and prove to be a wise investment, as elements of this timeless trend return season after season. Set sail with a mix of patriotic colors, clean lines, and metallic touches for added flare—a suitable combo for the office, summer strolls, and, of course, a yacht.
Clockwise from upper left:
1. Cape-stripe swimsuit ($112; J. Crew). The essential suit for summer afternoons on land or sea. Pair with a crisp white oxford for a chic cover-up.
2. Platinum Sperry Top-sider boat shoe ($85; Nordstrom). A metallic edge on a classic style.
3. Rag & Bone red skinny jean ($175; Barneys). A pop of primary color adds a vibrant flare to a sleek cut.
4. Twisted chain collar necklace ($38; Lori’s Shoes). A statement chain necklace that makes knots a chic embellishment.
5. Kain Label pocket tee ($88; Saks Fifth Avenue). A super-soft tee with preppy stripes can be dressed up or down.
6. Slouchy tote ($350; Tory Burch). A straw tote with a timeless shape suits the beach and work.

Style Admirer Spring Picks: City Girl
Monday, May 24th, 2010
I was raised a suburban girl, but I was born to live in the city. From the shopping to the nightlife, Chicago has as many places to see as Sarah Jessica Parker has Manolos. These places—boutiques, festivals, parties, fashion shows, and more—beg for my attention, and I’m more than willing to oblige. Whether I’m heading to work or a wine bar, I’m a city girl on the go, so it’s important that my wardrobe keeps up with wherever the day and night takes me. Incorporating a sense of urban sophistication, comfortable silhouettes, and au courant trends, my spring must-haves are built around a day planner brimming with meetings, parties and, of course, shopping. Here’s how I’m able to look great all day without an unnecessary wardrobe change.
Clockwise from upper left:
1. Racerback tank in “Imperia Beige” ($50; Banana Republic). A basic that’s essential for summer layering.
2. White fitted button-up shirt ($44; Gap). A true classic that’s polished enough for day and easily accessorized for night.
3. Aviators by Gucci ($275; Nordstrom). Aviators add a slight edge to an otherwise understated outfit.
4. “Christine” black pump by Calvin Klein ($98; zappos.com). The cutout designs adds interest to a timeless heel.
5. Ankle Cigarette Jean by BDG ($40; Urban Outfitters). This skinny jean goes with everything, and the price is just right.
6. “Kali Tank” by Zamrie ($78; Zamrie; 1213 W Diversey Avenue, by appointment only). The hand-painted print on this silk top is breathtaking.
7. Fold-over bag by Marc by Marc Jacobs ($466; farfetch.com). When going from work to play, this bag has the storage room to carry everything I need.
8. Scalloped zipper cardigan in black ($98; J.Crew). This ladylike cardigan adds the finishing touch to a sundress or tank.
9. “Spring Break Scarf” ($18; Francesca’s Collections). This scarf adds a touch of color and is perfect for those breezy Chicago days.
10. Leather “Bailey” jacket by Cynthia Steffe ($525; Perchance; 3512 N. Southport Avenue). This lightweight yet luxurious jacket is my alternative to the omnipresent blazer.

Style Admirer Spring Picks: Cali Style
Thursday, April 29th, 2010
There’s something so enchanting about California. I don’t know if it’s the salty air, dry heat, or balmy winds, but a recent trip gave birth to my new look for spring. From the surfers in Malibu to the hippies in Topanga canyon, fashion inspirations ran rampant. Driving up the Pacific Coast Highway—the top down and Jimi Hendrix streaming out the speakers—I daydreamed about a fresh spring and summer wardrobe. When I got back to Chicago, I went hunting for my new must-have items, all reminiscent of SoCal ‘70s boho/surf culture. Though I can’t bring Cali home with me, I can steal its carefree style. Spring and summer in Chicago are all about relaxing and having fun while looking effortlessly cool. With these items, that couldn’t be easier.
1. Free People “Vintage Empress Headpiece” ($118; Free People). A bold statement piece with a gypsy vibe.
2. Topshop “Nibbled Tee” ($32; Topshop). I wanted an edgy crop top, so I went with this distressed, bleached style.
3. Oliver Peoples “Josselyn” sunglasses ($400; Oliver Peoples). What’s not to love about these oversized shades?
4. Gara Danielle turquoise ring ($225; Intermix). The way this ring blends glamour and boho is stunning.
5. Miss Robertson “Saber-Jute” sandal ($110; Lori’s Shoes; 824 West Armitage Avenue). Edgy neutral sandals are a perfect summer staple that can dress down otherwise fancy frocks.
6. Carolyn Hedaya lace romper ($229; Mulberry & Me; 2019 W Division Street). I thought crochet lace on a romper would scream hippie, but it actually feels quite modern.
7. Current/Elliot hi-waisted denim shorts ($185; Saks Fifth Avenue). For pairing with my new crop top!
8. Essie nail polish in Turquoise and Caicos ($8; Essie). This soft green hue takes a refreshing step away from pink and nude shades.
9. Antik Batik “Bongo Bag” ($320; shopbop.com). This looks like a vintage find. It’s practical yet adds an instant cool factor.
10. Nightcap lace bell bottoms ($197; shopthetrendboutique.com). These invoke images of Jane Birkin, and they’re perfect for a summer festival.
11. American Apparel wool floppy hat ($40; American Apparel). A chic alternative to the fedora that’ll protect me from the summer sun.
12. Jeffrey Campell “Charli-C” clog ($125; Nordstrom). A great neutral throwback from the ‘70s boho culture, and being a Chanel S/S 2010 replica doesn’t hurt either.
