Where the Wild Things Are

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Post Pic

There’s a “certain something” about animal prints. They’re sexy, statement-making and maintain their place on today’s fiercest catwalks. Designers like Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli, both of whom are notorious for their use of animal-inspired collections, never disappoint when it comes to using these feminine, exotic prints in their collections. Such options include leopard, cheetah, reptile and even birds of paradise–all symbolizing the timelessness fashion can possess. From Grace Kelly to Kate Moss, the animal trend is a favorite of style icons who embrace their wilder side. Despite the pattern, these classic prints add a retro yet playful approach to any outfit.

Leopard and snake prints are fan favorites for their chameleon-like wearability. For those who prefer a pop of color, peacock prints create an energetic, flirty look. Regardless, pair your animal print with a neutral, solid counterpart, or take a walk on the wild side and pair it with a tamed, contrasting print. Additionally, printed accessories are a subtle way to add flare to your outfit while still being refined and chic.

Not only are the animal-inspired fashions endless for Winter 2010 and Spring 2011, they’re so much fun to wear.  And isn’t that the ultimate fashion bonus?

Jewel Box

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Post Pic

Let’s face it, winter in Chicago can be like living in the Arctic. Thankfully, there’s a trend heating things up. Jewel tones electrified the Fall/Winter 2010 runways of designers such as Oscar de la Renta and 3.1 Phillip Lim. The goal of this dazzling display of color is to lure ladies away from the typical black and brown. Why? The trend has the power to make any girl stand out in a crowd, especially in a sea of neutrals. And, frankly, it adds a bit of excitement to our wardrobe. By opting for colors like ruby, tanzanite and emerald, clothing and accessories get a jolt of energy and flair rather than meshing with the colorless pieces that dominate most closets. With this trend, we can turn our winter blues into a brilliant cornucopia of turquoise and fuchsia.

One crucial thing to remember when wearing this style is to keep it simple and clean. When wearing an entire outfit of jewel tones, it’s important to balance the colors to create a cohesive look. Pair a brightly patterned blouse with a solid skirt in a matching shade, or a mix a multi-hued dress with a black belt and opaque tights. But, jeweled accessories cannot be overlooked. Try bright cobalt or indigo pumps or booties, and chunky collar necklaces, chandelier earrings and bangles as an easy way to add a bit of oomph to a look.

The Swimsuit Pursuit

Friday, July 16th, 2010

post thumbnail

With temperatures hovering in the 90s, we might just have a steady stream of summer weather hanging around Chicago. That said, swimsuit season is officially in full swing. For hot days appropriately spent at the pool, beach, or on a boat, a fabulous suit is the key component to lounging lazily by the water. When considering a new one- or two-piece, the right fit, proportion, cut and pattern always come into play. However, also think about how to incorporate some of the season’s biggest trends into your swimwear. The season’s extensive variety of suits makes experimenting with new styles and patterns an exciting part of the swimsuit pursuit. Take a fashion-forward approach to that itsy bitsy teeny weeny and confront the summer sun in style. H20 optional.

Eternal Trend: The Trench Coat

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Post Pic

Fashion is fleeting and ever evolving, but there are some staples that remain in vogue season after season. The trench coat is one of those. A classic go-to for spring and fall, this jacket was invented during WWI to keep soldiers warm and dry, and now we wear it for the same reasons—but mostly for its undeniable style, of course. Even in its timelessness, the trench has been reconstructed in a variety of ways this season. From ruching to ruffles, the designs may not be totally traditional in form, but they’re no less fabulous. Whether you’re looking for your first trench, an upgrade, or a new style for your collection, spring 2010 is bringing us loads of options that pack wearability and flair, with all the chic connotations the trench implies.

Clockwise from upper left:

1. Classic trench in khaki from Banana Republic ($198)

2. Gray linen-blend trench coat from Old Navy ($50)

3. Mike & Chris “Marlton” trench with detachable hood ($341; Fix; 1101 W Fulton Street)

4. White trench with full skirt by Contrarian ($538; SHE Boutique)

5. Purple “Duchesse Silk Knotted Epaulette” trench coat by Burberry ($2,795)

6. “Ink Trench Coat” by ASOS ($111)

7. J.Crew‘s “Icon Trench” in light khaki ($298)

SHE Boutique Introduces N PRPA

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Post Pic

SHE Boutique made quite a name for itself between its home base in Highland Park and its nationally recognized online shop. Now the designer mecca is tightening its grip on label-loving shoppers with the introduction of N PRPA. Designed by Samantha Sleeper exclusively for SHE Boutique, the collection is a testimony to her exquisite sartorial skills and interest-grabbing vision—qualities she picked up while working at Alexander McQueen and Hermès. SHE and Creative Director Nicholette Prpa (hence the N PRPA) invite their fans to preview and pre-order the Autumn/Winter 2010 collection before it hits stores late this summer. This exclusive event is being held today and tomorrow at SHE Boutique’s Highland Park store (483 Central Avenue).
