Closely Knitted
Thursday, January 20th, 2011
Year after year, knitwear is a necessary wardrobe staple. This year, though, bulky textures and bold styles separate the au courant styles from the outdated. Such new approaches to sweater dressing–including cropped hems, oversized shapes and unexpected cuts–put a spin on the otherwise conventional look.
Nothing is more practical, or fashion-forward, right now than a giant sweater. Thankfully, some of the most popular styles are blanketed looks and menswear-inspired cardigans, commonly referred to as the grandpa or boyfriend sweater for their relaxed look. There’s also a rainbow of hues to keep things interesting, including pastels that inject a shot of color into the gloomy winter months.
Give the vast variety of styles out there, the chunky knit’s functionality is endless. Plus, it’s so easy to wear. Try layering a boyfriend cardigan with slim, feminine pieces, or leave it open and belted. Cropped sweaters are best worn during the winter with maxi lengths and high-waists. Finally, chunky knits and slim pants are a guaranteed winning combo, with they’re urban yet sophisticated feel.
Check out some of our favorite knits for Winter 2010:

The Tee: Anything but Basic
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010
When I went rummaging through my closet for a trusty t-shirt to welcome the warm weather, I realized my tee collection could use a serious upgrade. Many of my once highly favored shirts are now faded, ill-fitting and not on par with the season’s tee trends. Naturally, I went looking for some new ones to replace the old!
As an essential part of a spring and summer wardrobe, t-shirts have the uncanny ability to be dressed up or down, all while keeping you nice and cool (literally and figuratively!). This season, the tee selection includes graphic, patterned, cropped, oversized, embellished and classic styles to suit your mood and diverse tee needs. With this kind of variety, the tee is now anything but basic. The styles are vast, the outfits infinite, so experiment freely this casualwear! Try a cropped tee with a pair of jersey harem pants. Or a neon-hued, oversized tee with a pair of leggings and snakeskin ballet flats. A graphic t-shirt will create an interest-adding contrast when worn with a cotton blazer, wide-leg linen pants, and a cork wedge. Check out these other styles to update your tee collection this season.
Clockwise from upper left:
1. Two-sided gray jersey tee ($25; Akira)
2. Stella McCartney oversized tee with stripes and hibiscus print ($421; farfetch.com)
3. Graham & Spencer pink and gray contrast tee ($152; Neiman Marcus)
4. Striped cropped tee ($35; Sofia Vintage)
5. Whistles Eiffel Tower t-shirt ($76; ASOS)
6. Tribal v-neck tee ($24; Urban Outfitters)

Nicole Richie Shops Chicago
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010
Nicole Richie with the ladies of Sofia Vintage and Dana Rebecca Designs’ “Sharone Ezra” ring, one of Nicole’s Chicago purchases.
Last weekend Nicole Richie was at Michigan Avenue’s Nordstrom to promote the launch of her new line, Winter Kate. A large Chicago audience greeted the actress-turned-designer to shop the 40-piece boho chic collection rooted in classic fabrics and shapes. After the trunk show, Nicole stopped by the recently relocated Sofia Vintage (72 E Oak Street) and walked away with an impressive representation of what Chicago fashion has to offer. First, she snagged the “Sharone Ezra” cocktail ring with a stunning lemon quartz stone ($2,640) by local jewelry collection Dana Rebecca Designs. Other celebrity fans of Dana Rebecca Designs include Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, Nikki Reed, Oprah Winfrey, and Katy Perry. Also during her trip to Sofia Vintage, Nicole picked up a Hamsa necklace and Steven Shin evil eye bracelets.

On the Red Carpet: Leighton Meester in Chicago Fashion
Wednesday, January 6th, 2010
Leighton Meester, star of the hit CW show “Gossip Girl” and a now aspiring singer, kicked off 2010 at Chicago’s popular nightclub Underground. At about 1 A.M., Leighton took the stage to promote her new pop/R&B album, which has yet to announce a release date. Though we weren’t there for her performance, we did get wind of her Chicago-bought clothing and accessories. Leighton is known for her stand-out uptown-meets-downtown style, and this red carpet look perfectly nails such understated elegance.
Sofia Vintage (1165 N Clark Street) styled the starlet in a vintage long sleeve, backless Chantilly lace top ($75) and Armani high-waisted trousers from the early 90’s ($195). The look was accessorized with fine jewelry by Chicago-based Dana Rebecca Designs. Leighton donned the onyx and diamond “Julianne Himiko Hearts” earrings ($880) and the onyx and diamond “Lisa Michelle” ring ($1,540)—both of which were positively glamorous finishing touches.
Isn’t it wonderful seeing so much Chicago fashion on the red carpet?
