Two Hot Hues for Fall
Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Fall is quickly approaching, and that means it’s time to once again rethink our wardrobe. One of the key ingredients—and easiest tactics—for updating a look is incorporating the season’s hottest colors. Sifting through all the minimalist neutrals, ladylike pastels and bold jewel tones on the Fall 2010 runways, two shades continuously caught our eye: heather gray and lipstick red. Though these hues aren’t exactly neighbors on the color spectrum nor are they particularly new on the scene, they’ve still got the power to wow.
Heather gray boasts a flattering neutrality and universal appeal that make it a welcomed choice for fall. From nail polish to a completely gray ensemble, this muted shade is everywhere this season. Chances are you already own some heather gray garb, but working in items with au courant shapes and cuts will be an instant wardrobe refresher.
Lipstick red, on the other hand, is a bit trickier. Some women love its vibrancy; others hate it. When worn from head-to-toe, the shade can be a bit overwhelming for paler skin tones, but when used in smaller doses, this red is a radiant jolt of color. Find pieces with lipstick red mixed into the print or one-tone basics, such as a pencil skirt, cardigan, blouse, tights, bag or flats. Such options are plentiful for fall, allowing you to add an unexpected surge of color via dramatic, versatile pieces.

Style Admirer Spring Picks: Neutrals
Tuesday, May 18th, 2010
One of the most popular color palettes this season is, well, no color at all. Neutral hues dominated the spring runways (cue Chloé and Celine) and demanded attention despite their subtle nature. When worn from head-to-toe, they have an edge that’s still soft, effortless and sophisticated—quite the striking combo. For this reason, a nude palette tops my list of spring trends.
Whenever I go shopping, I gravitate toward classic pieces with a fresh twist. The timelessness of taupe, white, gray and tan, combined with interesting shapes and cuts, is just that. From menswear to bohemian, neutral pieces come from a variety of inspirations, but they always create looks that are impossibly chic and effortlessly cool. Here are some neutral garbs that’ll have you in the buff too.
1. House of Harlow “Sunburst” ring ($50; revolveclothing.com). This cocktail ring beacons attention without being too flashy or overpowering.
2. A look from 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Summer 2010 collection. Proof that head-to-toe neutrals are totally chic yet cool.
3. Gap straw fedora ($17; Gap). With so many fedoras out there, I love the simplicity of this two-toned style.
4. Paloma Barceló “Marina” espadrille ($195; net-a-porter.com). The straw and suede materials on this wedge give it rich texture.
5. Pitaya pleated shorts ($26; Pitaya; 1463 N Milwaukee Avenue). Shorts are the quintessential summer staple, and I love the breeziness of this style.
6. No. 6 silk romper ($318; Steven Alan). The lightness of this romper can be anchored with an edgy belt.
7. T by Alexander Wang tank dress ($105; Alexander Wang). The T line is my favorite for tees, but this dress—worn with a fedora, classic belt and gladiator sandals—is a summer go-to.
8. Stella McCartney silk slub “Hibari” jacket, lace “Ruma” top, and silk slub “Shiro” trouser ($1,895; $1,435; and $955, respectively. All by Stella McCartney). This look is the epitome of understated glamour.
9. See by Chloé single-breasted blazer ($515; farfetch.com). A white blazer can be worn over everything. My favorite combo for summer is with jean or silk shorts. You can really mix it up.
10. J.Crew belt in “glazed hazelnut” ($35; J.Crew). The color of this belt is an unexpected substitute for a brown shade.
11. Tylie “Madison” bag ($398; shebang; 1616 N Damen Avenue). A bag has to get me through the day, and I can fit anything is this one.
12. Maybelline Express Finish in “Sheer Satin” ($3.50; Target). With just a hint of pink, this polish is classic and totally on trend this season.

The Tee: Anything but Basic
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010
When I went rummaging through my closet for a trusty t-shirt to welcome the warm weather, I realized my tee collection could use a serious upgrade. Many of my once highly favored shirts are now faded, ill-fitting and not on par with the season’s tee trends. Naturally, I went looking for some new ones to replace the old!
As an essential part of a spring and summer wardrobe, t-shirts have the uncanny ability to be dressed up or down, all while keeping you nice and cool (literally and figuratively!). This season, the tee selection includes graphic, patterned, cropped, oversized, embellished and classic styles to suit your mood and diverse tee needs. With this kind of variety, the tee is now anything but basic. The styles are vast, the outfits infinite, so experiment freely this casualwear! Try a cropped tee with a pair of jersey harem pants. Or a neon-hued, oversized tee with a pair of leggings and snakeskin ballet flats. A graphic t-shirt will create an interest-adding contrast when worn with a cotton blazer, wide-leg linen pants, and a cork wedge. Check out these other styles to update your tee collection this season.

1. Two-sided gray jersey tee ($25; Akira)
2. Stella McCartney oversized tee with stripes and hibiscus print ($421; farfetch.com)
3. Graham & Spencer pink and gray contrast tee ($152; Neiman Marcus)
4. Striped cropped tee ($35; Sofia Vintage)
5. Whistles Eiffel Tower t-shirt ($76; ASOS)
6. Tribal v-neck tee ($24; Urban Outfitters)

In Full Bloom: Floral Dresses
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010
After seeing the burst of floral prints on the Spring 2010 runways, my all-solids wardrobe seemed suddenly drab. These flirty, cheery patterns were popular on the 2009 runways, and that popularity has blossomed into a floral fashion obsession. After all, is there a better way to say hello to the warm weather and sunny days of spring than with a fresh crop of flowery prints?
Floral Dresses have been and will continue to be a universal favorite for spring. The difference, though, from season to season is how we wear it. Capable of being integrated into any personal style, such as hippie chic, bohemian, preppy, indie, or downright girly-girl, these dresses come in a vast assortment of cuts and patterns–from abstract to realistic. Regardless of the pattern, color, cut, et al, the way I’m wearing these ethereal frocks for an evening out is with opaque tights that match the dress’ dominate hue and a pair of caged stilettos (yes, open-toed with tights!). For day, I slip on oxfords and a cross-body bag. When summertime comes around, nix the tights and grab a pair of wedges–and the chunkier the better this season. When accessorizing, keep it simple. The patterns are busy and too many distracting add-ons make the look suddenly overwhelming and over-thought. Never try to hard for any ensemble, especially when workin’ a bold print. The season’s floral dresses are whimsical garments that are surprising versatile when played-up correctly. From a leather-studded belt to wrist-fulls of bangles to three dainty necklaces, there are as many styling options as there are flowers in a flowerbed. Just remember to use moderation so the floral frock pops. Here’s some of my favorite styles this season. Try working one into your look!

4. Eskell’s “Mia Mustard Floral Ruffle Dress” ($160; Eskell)
5. “Hope Dress” by Dolce Vita ($176; shopbop.com)

The Urban Decay “Alice in Wonderland” Book of Shadows
Monday, February 1st, 2010
The fashion industry is in love with the fantastically outrageous costumes and makeup in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Designers like Stella McCartney and Tom Binns have created lines inspired by Burton’s 3D interpretation, and now Urban Decay has joined the mix. The “Alice in Wonderland” Book of Shadows Palette is available at Sephora ($52) and includes 16 best-selling shadows, all appropriately renamed to include Chessur, White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, Queen, etc. Also in the box, you’ll find a travel size of the Eyeshadow Primer Potion and two 24/7 Eye Pencils. What makes this little box so delightful, though, is the pop-up scene of Alice in the mushroom forest. When I opened it, it reminded me of a cross between my first ballerina jewelry box and my first makeup kit. Only this time, the makeup is way better and I actually know how to apply it.
