Trend Alert: Brogues (Oxford Shoes)
Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Given the popularity of towering heels with exotic skins and embellishments, it’s refreshing to see a classic, simplistic style back in the spotlight! If you haven’t noticed, menswear has been a popular inspiration among designers, and consequently, oxfords are making a huge comeback. They may look like a pair of your grandpa’s favorite shoes, but they still have a refined, vintage-y feel that’s totally classy when worn the right way. Built for casual wear with jeans or chinos, for example, these shoes can be easily dressed up as well. For spring, pair your oxfords with a variety of other popular items, such as a floral dress with stockings or boyfriend jeans and a blazer. My personal favorite: a pair of brown or gold oxfords added to boyfriend jeans; a long, white tank top under a gray crop top; a black boyfriend blazer; and an oversized black handbag. Though you may think oxfords aren’t the easiest shoes to pull off, their versatility and expression make them a no-brainer for spring. Here’s a look at some of my favorites styles.

Where the Wild Things Are
Friday, January 15th, 2010
It’s no secret that bold prints are one of the season’s biggest trends. From geometrics to florals, the variety is extensive, but today it’s the leopard print that’s driving us wild! Such patterns can be an intimidating addition to your wardrobe, but when done right, you can look impeccably fearless and chic. To harness your inner tigress, we went on the prowl for some statement-making leopard prints that are as fierce as they are easy-to-wear. Take a look at these pieces and discover how surprisingly simple it is to master this trend!
1. Throwing on an amazing winter coat is one of the easiest ways to add serious style in mere seconds. Rebecca Taylor’s “Runway Ruffle Coat” ($495) is discretely dramatic, with its dark hues and girly ruffles.
2. What fashionista doesn’t want a handbag that attracts a little attention? This leopard bag by Karen Millen ($199) has a sassy print and edgy hardware, but it won’t overwhelm your look.
3. We love tights and cherish the opportunity to go all out with this accessory. Pair these leopard tights ($20; Dillards) with a LBD and neutral heels for a polished look with lots of attitude.
4. A pencil skirt is one item every woman needs in her closet. Step away from the classic black and venture into new territory with this “Ocelot Pencil Skirt” by MICHAEL Michael Kors ($80; zappos.com).
5. Hello, Lover! Giuseppe Zanotti’s leopard slingback pumps ($635; Saks Fifth Avenue) have us dizzy with delight. At first glance, you may think you’ll only wear these with a few cocktail dresses, but this heel is totally versatile. Try a casual twist by pairing them with skinnies and a fitted tee or boyfriend chinos and an oversized sweater.
6. We have a pretty deep affinity for belts, whether they’re barely noticeable or outfit-completing accents. This one ($40; J.Crew) will play up neutrals or add an interesting contrast to other prints.
7. The thought of these gloves ($150; Tory Burch) with a solid-colored wool coat is truly exciting. It’s one of the little ways you can add an unexpected edge to your outerwear.
8. Shorts in fresh prints will be a major player this spring, and these cuffed ones by Peter Som ($680; Saks Fifth Avenue) boast the neutral hues necessary to create a bevy of looks. Pair these shorts with a simple tank or even a vibrant floral top.
9. If you ask us, this is the perfect leopard flat ($40; Steve Madden)—no bows, frills, etc. Just a classic, delicate shape in an intriguing print.
If wearing leopard prints, remember to use discretion when pulling your look together. These prints can hold their own, so don’t layer these pieces with competing garments and accessories and other animal prints. Sometimes too much of a good thing isn’t always a good thing.

What a Stud
Monday, October 12th, 2009
Biker chic is in full throttle this fall. It’s a dynamic duo of punk and glam that makes getting dressed an event fit for a rock star. While there is much that can be said about this trend, I’m honing in on one teeny, tiny detail: studded embellishments. This season, the hardware can be found on every imaginable accessory and garment, from gloves to the must-have leather jacket, so I compiled a select few of my bedazzeled favorites found online and around Chicago.
Fashion is meant to be fun, and it was a blast sifting through the bevy of oh-so-studdly items. Handbags were the first stop, and I fell in love with Miu Miu’s studded leather tote ($1,465; mytheresa.com). With its irresistible fusion of classic form and edgy detail, it’s great for day or night. Be & D’s “Studded Garbo Convertible Clutch” ($695; saksfifthavenue.com) packs glamour and attitude like few can, but the versatility to wear it as a clutch or shoulder bag puts this accessory over the top.
If you want to work studs into your ensemble but in smaller doses, there are infinite possibilities. Belts are a go-to statement maker, and Linea Pelle’s black skinny belt at Perchance ($98; 3512 N Southport Ave; perchanceboutique.com) looks great with nearly anything. When it comes to jewelry, what girl doesn’t love a little bling? CC Skye’s “Pave Pyramid Stud Earrings” at Krista K ($150; 3458 N Southport Ave; kristak.com) is an unexpected substitute for your everyday diamond (or cubic zirconia!) studs. If you want to amp up the attitude, the “Hematite Cuff” by Rachel Rachel Roy ($75; macys.com) demands attention with its punk, urban vibe, while Coach’s “sterling pyramid stud” ring ($98; coach.com) says “I’m a rebel” with ladylike sensibility.
For clothing, I went with softer pieces that are just plain wearable. If you maxed out your interest in vests last fall, this one by 3.1 Phillip Lim ($450; net-a-porter.com) is sure to rekindle your interest. Easily dressed up or down, this vest’s gorgeous cream wool-blend strikes a perfect balance between the masculine and the feminine. For those days when you want comfort and style, LaROK’s “Studded Pocket Cardigan” ($328; nordstrom.com) is cozy enough to sleep in. Paired with leggings and flat booties, you’ve got a look that’s effortlessly chic.
When it comes to shoes, it’s a wonder I was able to narrow down my selection to only two pairs. I’m fixated on booties this season, so I went with one closed-toe and one open-toe. The Jeffrey Campbell booties at Lori’s Shoes ($154; 824 W Armitage Ave; lorisshoes.com) are loaded with hardware. The chrome studs and buckle and the wedge heel have a toughness that can vamp up a floral print or top off a leather bomber. The “Wrappp” [sic] suede open-toed bootie ($160; stevemadden.com) has studded straps that wrap around the ankle and drape over the heel, like a necklace for your shoe! For a fearless get-up, wear these heels with a leather skirt, boyfriend blazer and textured tights. Harley optional.
