From left to right: designs by Lara Miller, Kirk James Collection and Borris Powell
Style Chicago capped off Fashion Focus with the final runway show of the week, The Art of Fashion. Like all the other shows before it, it compiled lots of local designers into a single production. As the name suggests, it fused fashion and art by combining established fashion houses and emerging talent, sprinkled with performance art. To start, the six established designers, including Lara Miller, Kirk James Collection, Paul Sisti, Lauren Lein, Borris Powell and Elda de la Rosa, presented their Spring 2010 collections. Then three emerging designers followed: Hector-Javier MonArrez, Lydia Wawrzyniak and Fraley Le.
After a theatrical introduction, the fashion creations paraded in front Chicago’s social scene. Of the six established, our favorites were Lara, Kirk James, Borris and Elda. Lara’s collection of casual knitted dresses and separates displayed her knack design that holds versatility and purpose. Kirk James showed us his flirty frocks, twist on basics and figure-flattering shapes—garments that transition effortlessly from day to night. Borris’ daywear and eveningwear was a rainbow-hued collection of jackets and dresses, including an unforgettable red cocktail dress with a voluminous tulle skirt. Finally, we saw Elda’s beautifully crafted couture. Another colorful display, her designs were suited for bridesmaids, dinner dates and galas.

After a rather awkward interception by a performance artist covered in a white sheet, it was the three emerging designers’ turn. Hector-Javier used blue and black to shade the masterfully constructed designs with pouf and pointed shoulders, oversized bows and shimmering sequins. Next was the show’s highlight: Lydia Wawrzyniak, who proved fashion is art. Her silk dresses were handmade with jaw-dropping detail, including structural tiered skirts and paper mache-like detail. Mark our words, these two designers will soon no longer be classified as “emerging.”

Ladies Night Out
Sunday, July 25th, 2010
Thursday night attracted hordes of ladies to StyleChicago.com’s “An Evening of Modern Beauty.” Set in the lavish W Chicago City Center, guests circled around more than 25 fashion, beauty and lifestyle vendors while sipping complimentary martinis, wine and beer. Pampering and entertainment was the universal theme as women engaged in various feminine indulgences, such as eyelash extensions, massages, shopping and product sampling. The vendors included the likes of K. Amato, Fusion Beauty, Massage Envy, Trish McEvoy, Xtreme Lashes and Swaby. Aside from the obvious entertainment, tasty drinks and outstanding venue, women enjoyed a ladies night out and, maybe more importantly, the overflowing goodie bags. Stuffed with $250 worth of fashion, beauty and food products, the bags were worthy of the ticket price alone—something that’s hard to come by in this economy. Style Chicago outdid itself with this annual event that was bigger than last year’s and all the more impressive.

Style Chicago Hosts Latin-inspired Event
Monday, March 22nd, 2010
North Avenue Beach compared to Miami’s South Beach? No huge difference, right? Who are we kidding… Though Chicago’s beaches lack comparison to South Beach, we can still party like we’re in Miami. This Thursday night, StyleChicago.com is hosting “South Beach Style: Latin-inspired Girls Night Out” at Nacional 27. From 6-9pm, the lifestyle website has partnered with the dining hotspot to provide a spicy evening with delicious food, creative cocktails and wines, salsa dancing, spa and beauty services, and fashion by Custo Barcelona and TOUS. To be clear, by “food” and “cocktails” we mean Nacional 27’s delectable ceviches and tapas and the like-you’ve-never-had-before drinks by elite mixologist Adam Seger. This makes the ticket price worth it in and of itself. After a couple (or several!) of those cocktails, you’ll be hitting that salsa dance floor like it’s nobody’s business. Finally, the opportunity to shop and be completely pampered (by H2O+, delle amiche, Elle Homme, Massage Envy, Flutter Lash Studio, and Red Door Spas) while partying like a rock star is the icing on the tres leche cake.
Tickets are $45 for VIP Goodie Bag tickets or $35 for General Admission (all access, but no goodie bag). Tickets must be purchased in advance online and are likely to sell out. Get tickets here.

Making the Best of 2010
Monday, January 25th, 2010
Resolutions have never been my thing. I’m all about making positive changes in my life, but I’ve never understood how to choose only one improvement for the year and actually get the job done. So, in a valiant attempt to understand how the whole “resolution” business works, I’m getting some help. This Wednesday, Style Chicago is having their 3rd annual Resolutions 2010 event at the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower (20 E Chestnut Street), where experts will assist me in choosing and sticking with my New Year resolution. In addition to motivating me to better myself, the event includes lots of goodies: cocktails by X-Rated Fusion Liqueur and wines by Bin 36, hors d’oeuvres by Café des Architectes, free mini-spa services, makeup by MAC Cosmetics, and fitness and lifestyle advice. I predict, though, that my resolution won’t involve drinking or eating less because I’ll definitely indulge in those Bin 36 wines and Café des Architectes appetizers. Yum!
VIP tickets ($45 for the 1st 250 ticket buyers) will get you a goodie bag with an estimated value of $250, plus food, drinks and services, and general admission tickets ($35) will get you food, drinks and services. Both ticket options are still available, but the event is expected to sell out. Purchase tickets here.
