Mario Makes a Model

The Mario, Make Me a Model finalists and Briana Smith, the winner
On Wednesday night, the Fashion Focus Chicago shows continued, and we took our place in the Millennium Park tent. The night’s presentation was “Mario, Make Me a Model,” a Project Runway-like competition with a twist. The designs were exclusively by local designers, but the focus was ultimately on the models. Instead of Heidi, Mario Tricoci helmed the project, and his team of hair and makeup artists made sure each model was runway ready. The five finalists were among the dozens of models who presented designs by Calvin Tran, reddoll by Tatyana Merenyuk, Jermikko, Zamrie and Dorisa.
Calvin Tran was the first to present, showing his slinky, liquidy fabrics that hugged the models’ bodies in all the right places. He fused sexy cuts with figure-flattering silhouettes for a collection that exuded class and femininity. Ashley Zygmunt’s label, Zamrie, was next. As usual, her separates were airy, girly and casual, always boasting her ladylike spin on classic shapes. The third designer in the line-up was Jermikko, who didn’t exactly take a clear direction. The designs haphazardly bounced from oddly constructed women’s suits to a funky-patterned metallic jumpsuit to an iridescent purple gown. Next was a unique fashion concept for the show: menswear. And, Dorsia impressed the hell out of us. Every piece fit like a dream and paid particular attention to how today’s men dress…or at least how they should. Ladies, buy this collection for the man in your life. Finally, reddoll by Tatyana Merenyuk closed the show. Showing only dresses, the designs were immaculately detailed, the construction outstanding. Our only complaint is that she opened with a shortened version of a Balenciaga-like gown she showed last year.
At the close of the show, the five finalists did one last strut run down the catwalk. After many thank-yous by Mario, he announced the winner: Briana Smith. Donning a gorgeous red strapless gown by reddoll, she was presented a trophy in addition to a trip for two from Apple Vacations and a modeling contract with Ford.

New Boutique: Local Lookbook
Wednesday, August 18th, 2010
Aviation is an unexpected platform from which to launch a career in fashion. Halli Mulei, however, did just that. Now the owner of Local Lookbook (1211 W Wester Avenue), a new boutique in Lincoln Park, Halli is a 14-year veteran pilot with a clear understanding of style. With this new endeavor, she offers a selection of clothing and accessories that puts Chicago designers at the forefront. With local labels such as Evil Kitty, Zamrie, Marisa Swystun, jlee silver, TZEN and Objets D’Envy, the boutique sells some of the most popular fashion brands owned and operated right here at home. Other labels include Crystal Wells, caro and Elizabeth Smith, which creates a well-rounded inventory in a charming, Parisian-inspired shop.
It’s a lovely thing when local fashion fosters local fashion.

Style Admirer Spring Picks: City Girl
Monday, May 24th, 2010
I was raised a suburban girl, but I was born to live in the city. From the shopping to the nightlife, Chicago has as many places to see as Sarah Jessica Parker has Manolos. These places—boutiques, festivals, parties, fashion shows, and more—beg for my attention, and I’m more than willing to oblige. Whether I’m heading to work or a wine bar, I’m a city girl on the go, so it’s important that my wardrobe keeps up with wherever the day and night takes me. Incorporating a sense of urban sophistication, comfortable silhouettes, and au courant trends, my spring must-haves are built around a day planner brimming with meetings, parties and, of course, shopping. Here’s how I’m able to look great all day without an unnecessary wardrobe change.
Clockwise from upper left:
1. Racerback tank in “Imperia Beige” ($50; Banana Republic). A basic that’s essential for summer layering.
2. White fitted button-up shirt ($44; Gap). A true classic that’s polished enough for day and easily accessorized for night.
3. Aviators by Gucci ($275; Nordstrom). Aviators add a slight edge to an otherwise understated outfit.
4. “Christine” black pump by Calvin Klein ($98; zappos.com). The cutout designs adds interest to a timeless heel.
5. Ankle Cigarette Jean by BDG ($40; Urban Outfitters). This skinny jean goes with everything, and the price is just right.
6. “Kali Tank” by Zamrie ($78; Zamrie; 1213 W Diversey Avenue, by appointment only). The hand-painted print on this silk top is breathtaking.
7. Fold-over bag by Marc by Marc Jacobs ($466; farfetch.com). When going from work to play, this bag has the storage room to carry everything I need.
8. Scalloped zipper cardigan in black ($98; J.Crew). This ladylike cardigan adds the finishing touch to a sundress or tank.
9. “Spring Break Scarf” ($18; Francesca’s Collections). This scarf adds a touch of color and is perfect for those breezy Chicago days.
10. Leather “Bailey” jacket by Cynthia Steffe ($525; Perchance; 3512 N. Southport Avenue). This lightweight yet luxurious jacket is my alternative to the omnipresent blazer.
